The first season of The Office introduced the main characters and established the general plot. The season revolves around Michael Scott, regional manager of the Scranton branch office, as he tries to convince filmmakers of a documentary that he presides over a happy and well-running office. The characters of Jim Halpert, Dwight Schrute, Pam Beesly, and Ryan Howard are also introduced. Jim is a sales representative who often undermines his coworker Dwight, while Pam is the receptionist who deals with Michael's behavior. Ryan is a temporary employee who observes the office dynamics. The show is a mockumentary sitcom that depicts the everyday work lives of office employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The series is an adaptation of the BBC series of the same name, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and adapted for NBC by Greg Daniels.
