The Legend of the Blue Sea is a 2016 television series spanning the genres of comedy, drama, and science fiction and fantasy. The story follows a mermaid from the Joseon era who follows her true love, a nobleman's son named Kim Dam-Ryung from the Joseon Dynasty, into modern-day Seoul. Dam-Ryung's modern-day doppelganger is Heo Joon-Jae, a skilled scam artist. Joon-Jae initially takes an interest in the mermaid, Sim Chung, because she wears a jade bracelet valued at six million dollars.
With nowhere else to go, Sim Chung is taken in by Joon-Jae. At his home, she encounters Joon-Jae's con partners, Jo Nam-Doo and Tae-O, who are hiding from a vengeful past victim of their scams. Sim Chung also faces a rival for Joon-Jae's affection named Cha Si-A, who is a researcher at KAIST dealing with ancient artifacts. Additional danger arises in the form of a killer named Ma Dae-Young, who is sent by Joon-Jae's stepmother. The stepmother aims to make her own son the heir to Joon-Jae's fortune, leaving Sim Chung to navigate her unfamiliar new environment while helping Joon-Jae evade ongoing threats.
