Overview
The Hungarian Dressmaker is a 2024 drama film directed by Iveta Grófová. Set during World War II, the film is an adaptation of an eponymous novel by Peter Krištúfek. The story is set on the Slovak-Hungarian border and nearby Bratislava during the dramatic era of the First Slovak State and the turbulent years of the war. The plot follows a Hungarian widow and dressmaker named Marika Sándorfi, who shelters a Jewish boy in her home to hide him from a fascist militia. The boy in hiding, Šimon Holan, possesses a special ability to survive that relies on dreaming and a child’s fantasy. The narrative deals with the precarious border between humanism and the protection of one's own life in situations when one excludes the other.
