The Horse of Pride 1980

Overview

The Horse of Pride is a drama film released in 1980 with a runtime of two hours. Set in early twentieth-century Brittany, the story follows two peasants who marry, have a son, and live in traditional Breton ways with three generations under one roof, a division of labor between the sexes, elders stories at night, and politics and religion during their little free time. Hard times affect the community, as la Chienne du Monde drives some to suicide and Ankou, representing death, is close at hand. A son named Pierre is born into this republican family. His lyric childhood is interrupted by the outbreak of war and the conscription of his father. He learns his catechism and, as a child of a Reds, also reveres school. Throughout his early years, his grandfather and father often put him on their shoulders, giving him a ride on the horse of pride.
