The Godfather is a 1972 American epic gangster film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The screenplay was co-written by Coppola and Mario Puzo, based on Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name. The film chronicles the story of the fictional Italian-American Corleone crime family over the course of a decade, from 1945 to 1955. It stars an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, and Robert Duvall. The narrative centers on the aging patriarch of the Corleone family, Vito Corleone, whose attempt to retire from organized crime is disrupted when he survives an assassination attempt. In response to the attack, his youngest son, Michael Corleone, becomes increasingly involved in the family business, ultimately taking control and orchestrating a violent campaign of vengeance against those responsible.
