Created by William Roberts, the series featured Donna Reed, Paul Petersen, Carl Betz, and Shelley Fabares. It holds the distinction of being the first television family sitcom to place the mother at the center of the narrative. Reed portrayed the character Donna Stone, a loving wife and mother who navigated the various situations and problems common to a middle-class family during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The program explored typical domestic challenges, including the process of firing a clumsy housekeeper, organizing a retirement celebration for a colleague, and the struggle to find quality time away from the children. Throughout its broadcast history, the show was sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company and Johnson and Johnson, with the Singer Company later serving as a principal alternate sponsor.
