Season overview
The first season of The Closer introduces Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a CIA-trained interrogator originally from Atlanta, Georgia. After serving in law enforcement in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., she moves to Los Angeles to lead the LAPD’s new Priority Murder Squad, which is later renamed the Priority Homicide Division. Recruited by Assistant Chief Will Pope, Brenda faces immediate resistance from colleagues who view her as an outsider. Captain Taylor of the Robbery-Homicide division acts as an adversary, even attempting to force her resignation by encouraging her squad to request transfers. Throughout the season, Brenda struggles to establish her authority while navigating the efforts of Taylor and Detective Lt. Andy Flynn to undermine her investigations. Despite these challenges, Brenda demonstrates her skill as a closer by obtaining confessions and solving complex cases, such as the murder of a technological genius. Over time, she earns the respect and loyalty of her team, including Sgt. David Gabriel and eventually Detective Flynn. By the end of the season, the squad stands united against Captain Taylor's final attempt to remove Brenda from her position, marking her successful integration into the department.
