Overview
SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated comedy television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series first aired as a sneak peek after the Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999, and officially premiered on July 17, 1999. It is set in the subterranean city of Bikini Bottom in the Pacific Ocean and follows the life of a square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, and loves his job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. He often finds himself in trouble and has a knack for getting into strange situations with his friends, including his best buddy, a starfish named Patrick, and his surfer-girl squirrel pal, Sandy Cheeks. The series is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio and United Plankton Pictures, Inc. SpongeBob SquarePants is often shortened to SpongeBob and is chronologically the twelfth Nicktoon to debut.
