Season 5 begins as two daughters, Mykelti and Madison, graduate high school. A celebration involving the adults lip-syncing a song causes negative feelings for Janelle, who dislikes being outgoing and feels embarrassed in public by the others. Janelle also addresses deeper issues of not feeling heard by seeing a therapist to discuss this and her challenging relationship with first wife Meri. Professionally, the family debates turning down investors to retain full ownership of Sisterwives' Closet and considers whether to keep products entirely as their own creations or resell other artists' items. Meanwhile, Christine's mother moves in with her in Las Vegas, and the Browns host two anthropologists for two days to observe the inner workings of their polygamous lifestyle. Finally, after five years of mental deliberation, Meri files for a legal divorce from Kody so he can adopt Robyn's three children from a previous marriage.
