It was preceded by a 1919 film of the same name. Set in the sixteenth century, the plot involves a conspiracy among the King's Scottish mercenaries that develops into a touching and tragic romance as the plundering conspirators try to escape. Specifically, three Scottish noblemen escape from Gripsholm Castle and break into the home of Lord Arne. They proceed to kill everyone inside except for Lord Arne's adopted daughter, Elsalill. Upon its release, the 1954 film received positive reviews specifically for its color cinematography.
