The first season of Saturday Night Live aired during the 1975–1976 television season as a weekly 90-minute American sketch comedy and variety show on NBC. The series premiered on October 11, 1975, and concluded its 24-episode run on July 31, 1976. The program was created by producer Lorne Michaels. The development of the show began after NBC Tonight Show host Johnny Carson requested that weekend broadcasts of Best of Carson be discontinued. Fearing that Carson might defect to a competing network, NBC sought to fill the resulting late-night programming gap. The network recruited Dick Ebersol, a protégé of ABC Sports president Roone Arledge, to develop a new variety show. Ebersol subsequently hired Michaels to serve as the show-runner. The series features a large and varying cast of repertory and newer performers who present sketches parodying contemporary culture and politics. Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest who typically delivers an opening monologue. The show utilizes the Saturday Night Live Band and features announcer Don Pardo. Performers and artists collaborate to present short sketches covering current, intelligent, and occasionally ridiculous topics.
