Overview

Running on Empty is a 1982 Australian action and drama film directed by John Clark. The film, which was released in the United States under the title Fast Lane Fever, features a cast including Terry Serio, Deborah Conway, Max Cullen, and Richard Moir. The story follows a young man named Mike, who works as a steel worker alongside his best friend and mechanic, Tony. Outside of their professional lives, the two men are involved in the local street racing scene. Mike, who owns a Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III, finds himself in a dangerous situation after pursuing the girlfriend of a local street racing king named Fox. As a result, Mike must compete in races to protect his money, his life, and his relationship. Through a series of events involving nightclubs, road trips, and racing, the film portrays the experiences of teenagers in 1980s Australia. While it was a minor success at the box office, the film has since gained a cult following due to its depiction of the era's street racing culture and vehicles.
