Over two thousand Union soldiers, passengers, and crew members were crammed aboard the steamboat Sultana, which was only licensed to carry three hundred seventy-six people. Factors including graft, greed, overcrowding, a poorly maintained boat, and the Mississippi River being swollen with spring snowmelt conspired together to create a disaster. On April 27, 1865, the boat boilers exploded, causing what is described as the worst maritime disaster in United States history.
