Set in 1990, the first season depicts a time when Madonna's ballroom ode Vogue sweeps the nation, while characters including Blanca, Pray Tell, and the House of Evangelista know that life is not always a ball. Earlier in the series chronology, in 1987 New York, the LGBTQ ball fixture Blanca starts her own house and soon becomes a mother to a gifted dancer and a sex worker.
