The series follows novelist Carol Sturka, who finds herself isolated after an alien virus transforms the rest of humanity into a peaceful and content hive mind known as the "Others". The Others accommodate the wishes of those who remain unaffected, but admit that they will ultimately seek to assimilate them when they learn how to do so. Carol is adamant against their efforts as she searches for a way to reverse the Joining. The series is set and primarily filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
