Once Upon a Time, There Was a King... is a 1955 family, comedy, and fantasy film with a runtime of one hour and forty-seven minutes. Directed by Bořivoj Zeman, the movie features a cast including Jan Werich, Vlasta Burian, Irena Kacírková, and Stella Májová. The story centers on a selfish, widowed ruler barely tolerated by his subjects, who is appropriately called King Myself, First. He asks his three daughters to name the measure of their love for him. When one daughter tells him she loves him more than salt, he fails to understand her meaning and banishes her from the kingdom. Assuming love can only be measured by precious metals or talent, which are the answers given by his other two daughters, his arrogance leads him to gather all the salt in the kingdom and destroy it. This action eventually backfires as the king slowly learns the universal value of salt.
