New Legend of Madame White Snake is a television series based on the Chinese legend of Madame White Snake. The story follows Bai Su Zhen, who after many centuries of disciplined training in Taoism, transforms herself from a snake into human form with the help of a heavenly immortality pill. Guided by the Mother of Mercy, Guan Yin, Bai Su Zhen seeks immortality on her quest for divinity. She meets Xiao Qing, also originally a serpent, and defeats her in combat, choosing to spare her life. Xiao Qing then transforms into a female maiden and swears her loyalty to Bai Su Zhen, becoming like a sister to her. The series is a 1992 TV production, also known as Xin Bai Niang Zi Chuan Qi, and stars Angie Chiu and Cecilia Yip. It combines elements of drama and sci-fi fantasy.
