The episode opens in the tranquil village of Martyr Warren, where a group of New Age travellers has set up a temporary camp. Their presence quickly becomes a source of friction, particularly with Hector Bridges, the local magistrate, whose confrontations with the itinerants are noted by the police. The tension in the community is palpable, and the authorities are aware that the arrival of the travellers has disturbed the usual peace of the village.

The situation escalates dramatically when Hector Bridges is discovered shot dead. The investigation, led by Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and his partner, Detective Sergeant Troy, reveals that Bridges was a figure widely feared. Even members of his own family are suggested to have harboured animosity toward him, indicating that his death may have been motivated by long‑standing personal grievances as well as the recent disputes with the travellers.

Further complicating the case, the detectives learn that one of the travellers is a former British army officer who served alongside Hector Bridges during the Falklands War. This shared military history adds a layer of intrigue, suggesting that old loyalties and resentments may be influencing the current events.

The investigation takes another turn when a second body is found at the travellers’ camp: an elderly man whose death appears unrelated at first glance but soon becomes linked to the broader pattern of violence surrounding the community. The detectives must untangle the connections between the two victims, the travellers, and the villagers to determine who benefitted from the murders.

Amid the intense field work, Barnaby is not operating at his usual physical capacity. His wife, Joyce, has placed him on a strict diet to lose weight, a personal subplot that runs parallel to the main investigation and occasionally hampers his stamina during the chase for clues.

Through methodical questioning, forensic analysis, and a careful examination of the relationships between the villagers, the travellers, and the deceased, Barnaby and Troy gradually piece together the motive behind the killings. The episode concludes with the resolution of the case, restoring a fragile calm to Martyr Warren while highlighting the personal challenges faced by the detectives in the course of their duties.
