Plot: Earth is a humanistic utopia. Rudolf Sikorsky (head of the Commission for Contacts with Extraterrestrial Civilizations) instructs Maxim Kammerer to find Lev Abalkin. Abalkin is a progressive who disappeared after contact with the Wanderers (a supercivilization). Abalkin's group explored the planet Nadezhda, which was destroyed by a monstrous experiment by the Wanderers. After contact, Abalkin kills his partner and flies to Earth to start a process similar to the one that destroyed Nadezhda. Kammerer tries to get on Abalkin's [sentence cuts off].
