The series stars John Russell as Marshal Dan Troop and features Peter Brown as Deputy Marshal Johnny McKay. The show was set in Laramie, Wyoming during the 1879 and 1880s. Warner Bros. produced the series, which was part of the studio's lineup of western television shows, including Cheyenne, Maverick, Colt .45, and Sugarfoot. Marshal Dan Troop takes over in Laramie after the previous Marshal is killed and sets out to find a deputy and the man who murdered his predecessor. John Russell based the character of Dan Troop on an officer he knew in the United States Marine Corps, portraying him as a hardnosed, by-the-book, seasoned marshal.
