S3·E13 Night and Fog

Episode recap

The episode opens with the discovery of a senior citizen’s wife who has died under circumstances that suggest a deliberate act. Detectives are called to the scene and quickly learn that the husband, an elderly man, has voluntarily confessed to having helped his spouse end her life. His admission is straightforward, and at first glance it appears to close the case. However, the district attorney, Stone, is not convinced that the confession tells the whole story.

Stone’s unease is sparked by circulating rumors that the man was once involved with a Nazi collaborationist organization during World War II. The possibility that the defendant’s past may include participation in war crimes introduces a moral and legal complexity that Stone feels must be examined before the case proceeds. The episode therefore shifts focus from the immediate act of assisted suicide to a deeper investigation of the man’s historical record.

Detectives follow leads that connect the elderly suspect to a network of former collaborators, interviewing former acquaintances and reviewing archival material. Their inquiry uncovers a pattern of secrecy
