Late Show with David Letterman is a weeknight talk and comedy series hosted by David Letterman, featuring mature humor to appeal to its audience. The series gets its music from a house band and has been broadcast since its inception on August 30, 1993.

In Season 2, Episode 120, designated as Show number 0339, David Letterman initiates a remote segment involving the studio standby audience. Instead of allowing them directly into the theater, Dave sends the standby audience members away to a nearby retail location. Specifically, he directs them to visit The Gap.

While at The Gap, the audience members are instructed to purchase and wear matching outfits. They are required to complete this task before they are permitted to return to the theater for the broadcast. By the conclusion of the episode, the members of the standby audience successfully make their way back and are shown sitting in the theater wearing completely identical sweaters and khakis.
