La Poupée is a series of short films inspired by a comedy in four acts of the same name by Edmond Audran. The comedy was first performed at the Théâtre de la Gaieté in Paris. The story revolves around a young novice from a poor convent who is forced to marry to inherit from his rich uncle. The prior of the convent finds a solution to this situation by arranging for the novice to marry an automaton, with the intention of the novice returning to the convent. However, a real young woman, the daughter of a mannequins maker, decides to take the place of the doll. The film is based on a comedic play by Edmond Audran.
