Created by Abby Mann, the program features Telly Savalas in the title role of Theophilus Theo Kojak, a Detective Lieutenant with the New York City Police Department. The series depicts a bald, lollipop-sucking police detective who possesses a fiery, righteous attitude while battling crime in New York City. In his efforts to solve criminal cases, the detective occasionally stretches the law. In addition to Savalas, the cast includes Dan Frazer, Kevin Dobson, and George Savalas. The program took the time slot previously held by the series Cannon. Following the conclusion of its original five-year run, the series was later reprised through the production of seven television movies during the 1980s. Telly Savalas, who gained prominence through his work on the show, was known for his Greek heritage and his vocal support of Hellenism.
