The film utilizes archive material to track Weigel’s trajectory from her initial beginnings in the theater to her forced departure from Germany during the Nazi regime. Additionally, the narrative covers her later work involving the establishment and management of the Berliner Ensemble. By focusing on these historical milestones, the documentary aims to provide a comprehensive portrait of the artist, shifting the focus away from her identity as the woman at Bertolt Brecht’s side to highlight her individual legacy. The cast includes Birgit Minichmayr, who provides the voice for Helene Weigel, and August Diehl, who serves as the narrator. Through this biographical approach, the film explores the multifaceted nature of a figure who was both a dedicated political activist and a significant force within the performing arts.
