Overview

Hans in Luck is a 1936 film adaptation of the German folk tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The production was directed by Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig and has a runtime of 59 minutes. The story follows a character named Hans who, after completing seven years of service, receives a large lump of gold as his reward. As he travels home, he engages in a series of trades, exchanging the gold for a horse, the horse for a cow, then a pig, a goose, and finally a grindstone. Although Hans loses the immense financial value of his initial payment through these exchanges, he feels increasingly free and happy. The narrative concludes with Hans dropping the heavy grindstone into a well, ultimately rejoicing in the fact that he no longer has any burdens to carry. The original folk tale, which serves as the basis for the film, was published in the second edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1819, drawing upon earlier work by Friedrich August Wernicke published in 1818.
