Sasahara Kanji, a college freshman, joins the university’s Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture—commonly known as Genshiken—to share his concealed enthusiasm for manga, anime and gaming. Upon his first visit, his unfounded pride is undermined by the scheming of Madarame, a sophomore member, yet Sasahara remains reluctant to acknowledge himself as an otaku. Over the course of the season he takes part in typical club activities, including outings to doujin‑shop venues and attendance at anime festivals. Through these experiences he interacts with a diverse group of members: Kosaka, a devoted otaku noted for his eccentric personality and striking appearance; Kosaka’s girlfriend Kasukabe Saki, who does not identify as an otaku; and Ohno, a student known for his involvement in cosplay, among others.
