Overview
Free State is a 2016 drama, family, and romance film released on April 27, 2016, in South Africa. The film follows the story of Jeanette, an open-minded law student who plans to become engaged to her boyfriend once he completes his national military service. During a summer holiday spent with her father in the Free State, Jeanette experiences a random act of kindness from an attractive Indian man. This encounter sparks an unexpected love affair between the two. Despite receiving warnings against pursuing these feelings, Jeanette chooses to continue the relationship. The couple engages in secret meetings, which is necessary because interracial relationships are against the law during this period. When the secret is eventually revealed, the situation leads to a tragic turn of events for the characters involved. The film has a runtime of one hour and forty-six minutes. It is distinct from the 2016 American historical war film titled Free State of Jones, which depicts the life of Southern Unionist Newton Knight during the American Civil War.
