Overview

Einar Schleef - No Germany Did I Find is a 2026 documentary film directed by Sandra Prechtel that examines the life and work of the artist Einar Schleef. Born in 1944 in Sangerhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleef was a multifaceted creator who worked as a theatre director, set designer, writer, photographer, painter, and filmmaker. Throughout his career, he lived under four different political systems and resided in both East and West Germany. The film utilizes archival materials to explore how Schleef challenged theatrical conventions and confounded expectations in both parts of the country. By delving into his monumental productions, the documentary portrays a universal artist who grappled with his GDR origins and the BRD present while failing to find a home in either Germany. Describing himself as a creative force, Schleef famously stated, I am not human, I am dynamite.
