Seeking reassurance about her health, she visits Doctor Legg, who tells her that she may be approaching menopause, adding another layer of personal reflection to her day.

In another part of the square, Nick Cotton speaks with Mary Smith, emphasizing that both of them are outsiders and encouraging a sense of solidarity between them. Their conversation underscores the theme of marginalisation that runs through the episode.

Naima Jeffery’s shop is visited by Mr Gill, a representative of The Firm. During his visit, Mr Gill takes cash directly from Naima’s till, an action that hints at the influence of organised interests on local business.
