Overview

Defenders of the Earth is an American animated television series produced in 1986. The program features characters originating from three comic strips distributed by King Features Syndicate, specifically Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Mandrake the Magician. Set in the year 2015, the narrative follows these iconic figures as they join forces to oppose their recurring adversary, Ming the Merciless. The heroes are joined by a cast of supporting characters, including Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, Kshin, Mandrake's assistant Lothar, and Lothar's son, L.J. The animated series consists of 65 episodes in total. Beyond the television production, the franchise expanded into a short-lived comic book series published by Star Comics. This print iteration was created by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, and John Romita, Sr. The closing credits of the animated series provide production attribution to Rob Walsh.
