Colonel Kwiatkowski is a military doctor who serves in a barracks hospital on the Western Territories. He is rewarded with a week's leave after successfully operating on a high-ranking officer. During his leave, Kwiatkowski and his friend steal a truck bound for Warsaw. Upon arriving in Warsaw, Kwiatkowski meets his prewar neighbor Krysia, and he instantly falls in love. Kwiatkowski also attends a dance at the surviving "Polonia" hotel, where he becomes involved in a confrontation with a Russian officer. To avoid further trouble, Kwiatkowski pretends to be a high-ranking officer, specifically a UB colonel, in order to save face.
