Overview

Close Enemies is a 2018 Belgian-French crime drama film directed by David Oelhoffen. The film features a cast including Matthias Schoenaerts, Reda Kateb, Adel Bencherif, and Sofiane Zermani. The story centers on Driss and Manuel, who both grew up on the same council estate, where the sense of belonging to their patch was much stronger than belonging to a country, nation, or culture. As adults, the two childhood friends take opposite paths. Manuel embraces the thug life, having assimilated that sense of belonging and built his life upon it, while Driss becomes a cop and shuns that background. When Manuel's biggest deal goes terribly wrong, both men must face the consequences of their decisions, as each has a price to pay. The film was selected to be screened in the main competition section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival.
