The series was created by John Ryan, who also wrote, illustrated, and produced it. Peter Hawkins was involved in bringing the character of Captain Pugwash to life. The series premiered on BBC One and the first episode aired on 22 October 1957. The show features the voice talents of Peter Hawkins, Noel Coleman, and Howard Marion-Crawford. The series ran for several years, with the second season premiering on September 16, 1974, and consisting of 30 episodes.
