The show was created and produced by Allen Funt and originated from a radio program titled Candid Microphone, which debuted on June 28, 1947. Following a series of theatrical film shorts that shared the same name as the radio show, the concept transitioned to television on August 10, 1948. The format has appeared on various United States television networks and in syndication during every decade since its inception, functioning as either a regular series or a collection of specials. The program concluded its broadcast history with a ten-episode run on the TV Land network in 2014. Currently, the production crew is working on a documentary focused on Allen Funt. The term candid refers to the expression of opinions or feelings in an open, honest, and sincere manner. Aside from its television history, the word is also used in contexts such as art photography to describe images captured in unposed moments.
