Big Brother 2000, also known as Big Brother 1, was the inaugural series of the British reality‑television game show that adapted the Dutch format that had attracted attention in 1999‑2000. The programme premiered on Channel 4 on 18 July 2000 and ran for nine weeks, concluding on 15 September 2000 after a total of 64 days. The series placed eleven strangers, referred to as “housemates,” in an isolated house where they were filmed continuously and cut off from the outside world. Each week the housemates nominated two fellow participants for eviction; the public then voted to decide which nominee would leave. Early in its run the show generated controversy, notably for employing professional psychiatrists to analyse the contestants’ personalities and actions. Despite the criticism, the series achieved strong audience figures, averaging 4.5 million viewers and reaching a peak of 10 million on the final night. Voter participation grew from over 400 000 calls in the first week to 7.8 million
