Big Brother, which premiered on July 5, 2000, on CBS, is the American adaptation of the reality competition television show originally created by John de Mol Jr. and Ron Diesel in 1997. The series is based on the Dutch show of the same name. The program follows a group of HouseGuests who live together in the Big Brother house for three months. During this time, the participants are isolated from the outside world and remain under constant surveillance with no privacy, living together 24 hours a day.
The format of the 2000 season functioned as a near-exact port of the Netherlands series. Each week, the HouseGuests participated in a nomination process where they selected two fellow housemates. The individuals who received the most nominations became eligible for banishment from the house. Following the nomination process, American viewers were invited to cast votes to banish a HouseGuest by calling a 1-900 number. As of 2022, following the conclusion of the Spanish version of the program, the American series holds the distinction of being the longest-running adaptation of the format. The show is categorized as a reality competition series.
