"Atsuhime" is a Japanese television series that premiered in 2008 as the 47th NHK Taiga Drama. The series is a biographical account of a woman born in Kagoshima Prefecture, then called Satsuma. She marries the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate and becomes a prominent figure in the inner palace of the Edo castle, known as Ooku. Following her husband's death, she assumes a new name, Tenshoin, at the age of 23. The series explores her efforts on behalf of the Tokugawa clan and the nation during a period of significant upheaval, the Meiji Restoration, led by individuals from her native Satsuma.
