The pilot episode of the animated comedy series American Dad!, created by a group including Seth MacFarlane, introduces a family living in Langley Falls. The series focuses on Stan Smith, a man who will stop at nothing to protect his country, and utilizes his CIA skills to help his thirteen-year-old son, Steve, win class president and the heart of the hottest girl in class, Lisa Silver. However, when becoming class president makes Steve mad with power, Stan is forced to jump in and save the day.

Meanwhile, Roger, an alien that Stan saved from Area 51, assists eighteen-year-old Hayley with her school paper. In exchange, Hayley provides him with boatloads of junk food to satisfy his sweet tooth. Unfortunately, consuming some Chocodiles sends Roger completely over the edge. A subsequent sugar crash prohibits him from finishing one of her papers, leaving Hayley with no choice but to pick up the pieces herself.

Additionally, the household includes Klaus, a goldfish who possesses the brain of a German man. Klaus spends his time pining after mother Francine. Despite his romantic ambitions, the closest Klaus will ever get to a date with her is the spin cycle with her sports bra.
