The story takes place in a world where advanced neuro-link technology known as Neuro Linkers allows people to connect to virtual networks and immersive online worlds.
The protagonist is Haruyuki Arita, a short, chubby, and socially isolated junior high student who faces frequent bullying from his classmates. To escape his harsh reality, he spends hours playing games online where he excels, though he still feels powerless in his everyday life. His routine changes drastically when he is introduced to a mysterious program named Brain Burst by Kuroyukihime, the popular vice-president of the student council.
Brain Burst is revealed to be much more than a typical game. It enables players, who are known as Burst Linkers, to accelerate their cognitive processes to the point where time appears to slow down around them.
