A Very British Coup is a television series released in 1988 that falls into the war and politics and drama genres. Starring Ray McAnally, the series was first screened on Channel 4 and was subsequently screened in more than 30 countries. The story follows working-class, left-leaning Harry Perkins after he is elected prime minister. As he works to implement social change via the democratic process, conservatives and their allies quietly begin working to remove him from power. Perkins pursues goals that include nuclear disarmament, the dissolution of newspaper monopolies, open government, and the closure of all United States military bases on United Kingdom soil. While many members of the government oppose his agenda, Perkins finds some support in Home Secretary Joan Cook and key members of his staff. During its run, the production won Bafta and Emmy awards.
