He began his career as a stage actor at the Changchun Theater at the age of twenty-four. As theater gradually lost popularity in Changchun, he and his family moved to Beijing when he was forty-nine to continue pursuing theater. Facing difficulties finding traditional acting jobs in Beijing, he developed a unique form of silent performance art, often involving painting himself and standing still for hours at a time. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he built a name for himself in Beijing and performed overseas in locations including Germany, France, and South Korea.
