Vittorio Gassman, born Vittorio Gassmann, was an Italian actor, director, and screenwriter. He was born in Genoa, Liguria, Italy on September 1, 1922, and died on June 29, 2000, at the age of 77. Popularly known as Il Mattatore, he is considered one of the greatest Italian actors. His career included important productions as well as numerous divertissements. His theatre debut took place in Milan in 1942 with Alda Borelli in Niccodemi's La Nemica. He later moved to Rome and acted at the Teatro Eliseo alongside Tino Carraro and Ernesto Calindri. In 1975, he won the main acting award at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in the film Profumo di donna. His known film credits include Spáči and Sváteční vyjížďka.
