Tala Ashe was born in Tehran, Iran on July 24, 1984, and immigrated to the United States when she was nine months old. She grew up in Powell, Ohio, near the state capital of Columbus, and participated in high school theatrical productions as both an actress and a director. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the Boston University School of Drama and trained at the Academy of Music and Drama in London and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York. Ashe subsequently appeared in numerous regional and Off-Broadway productions. Her first screen role was as Nadia in the 2008 film Waiting in Beijing. She also guest-starred on television series including Law and Order, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, 30 Rock, and Covert Affairs.
