Roderick Ross La Rocque was an American actor born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 29, 1898. He was the son of Edmund La Rocque, who was of French-Canadian descent, and Ann Rice La Rocque, who was of Irish descent. La Rocque began his career in stock theater at the age of seven and later worked at Essanay Studios in Chicago. After the studios closed, he moved to New York City to pursue stage work. He was eventually discovered by Samuel Goldwyn, who brought him to Hollywood. Over the course of two decades, La Rocque appeared in numerous films and successfully transitioned into sound cinema. He died on October 15, 1969, at the age of 70.
