Richard Brooks was an American screenwriter, director, novelist, and occasional producer who was born on May 18, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died on March 11, 1992, at the age of 79. Also known as Ruben S, his known credits include writing, and he bridged the transition from the classic studio system to independent productions while working to break free of industry censorship. His notable directorial works include Blackboard Jungle in 1955, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958, Elmer Gantry in 1960, In Cold Blood in 1967, and Looking for Mr. Goodbar in 1977.
