René Goscinny (4 August 1926 – 5 November 1977) was a Polish‑French comics editor and writer born in Paris, France. He is internationally recognised for co‑creating the comic book Astérix with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his contributions to the Lucky Luke series alongside Morris, a period regarded as the series’ golden age, as well as for the Iznogoud series with Jean Tabary. After spending parts of his youth in Argentina and New York, Goscinny returned to France and enlisted in the French Army in 1946, serving at Aubagne in the 141st Alpine Infantry Battalion. Promoted to senior corporal, he acted as the regiment’s appointed illustrator, producing illustrations and posters, and the following year illustrated the book The Girl with The Eyes of Gold.
