Raúl Rafael Juliá y Arcelay, known as Raúl Juliá, was a Puerto Rican actor and humanitarian born on March 9, 1940, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His film career peaked in the United States in the early 1990s, and he was known for his intense and varied roles on stage and screen. Born in San Juan, he gained an interest in acting while still in school and decided to pursue it professionally after completing his studies. After performing locally, he was convinced by entertainment personality Orson Bean to move and work in New York City. Bilingual since childhood, Juliá gained interest in Broadway and off Broadway plays, performing in mobile projects including the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre before being noticed by Joseph Papp. Raúl Juliá died on October 24, 1994.
