Mukerji made her acting debut in the 1997 film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat. Her first commercial success came with Karan Johar's 1998 romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which became her biggest commercial success at the time and earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.
