Ralph Waldo Ince was an American pioneer of the silent‑film era, working as an actor, director and screenwriter. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in January 1887 to English‑immigrant parents John and Emma Ince, and was raised in Manhattan where the whole family was involved in theatre; his sister was Bertha and his brothers John and Thomas H. Ince later studied art with cartoonist Dan McCarthy and briefly drew cartoons for the New York World. Ince began his film career near the start of silent cinema and accumulated more than one hundred forty acting credits. He died on 10 April 1937 at the age of fifty.
